NZIGP Legends of Speed celebrating David Oxton
The Cars and Stars come out for Legends of Speed
Plans are well in hand for the NZIGP Legends of Speed meeting celebrating David Oxton – being held at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park on January 25-26th 2025.
David enjoyed a long and successful open-wheeler career in New Zealand, winning eight championships, including five Gold Star titles. He drove a March Formula 1 car in the 1971 Tasman Series, which led to his first Gold Star title with George Begg’s FM4. He also won the Formula Ford title in 1971/72 and placed his car on pole position in the Formula Ford World Cup at Brands Hatch. He then had success with various Ralt RT4s in the Formula Pacific (Atlantic) category, including winning the New Zealand Grand Prix in 1983.
Formula Open NZ will be racing at the meeting and their grid will be showcasing some of the Formula Atlantic cars from the era with several being shipped in from Australia for the occasion. We will also have various other cars from Davids past on display and performing demonstration laps – including the FM4.
David also participated in several long-distance saloon car races driving a variety of cars including Ford Anglia, Triumph 2.5 PI, Fiat 131, Leyland P76 and Holden Commodore SS. Again, some of the original cars will be on display and taking part in demonstrations. The final years of his career included driving for Ford in a Sierra XR4Ti and for the Holden Racing Team with Peter Brock at Bathurst - but it was his single seater racing career for which he became renowned.
The event kicks off on Friday 24th January with a Race Car Test Day organised by Hampton Downs. Documentation and scrutineering will be available on the Friday before the meeting starts on Saturday.
On Saturday 25th, gates will open at 07:30 and qualifying will start at 08:30. There will be demonstration laps of vehicles associated with David along with some of the other drivers he competed against. Racing commences after lunch on Saturday and during the afternoon, there will be an autograph session at 2pm where fans can take time to meet with David and the other Legends of NZ Motorsport who will be in attendance.
On Saturday evening, there will be a Celebration Dinner for David to be held in the Hampton Downs Pavilion. Your Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be Michael Clark. Limited Tickets are available at $125 (plus card surcharges) each, so please book now.
Doors open at 6pm, with dinner from approx 7pm.
