What is Krampus?

Krampus is a figure from Central European folklore, often depicted as a half-goat, half-demon creature with horns, fangs, and a long tongue. Traditionally, Krampus accompanies Saint Nicholas during the Christmas season, particularly on Krampusnacht (Krampus Night) on December 5th.

While Saint Nicholas rewards well-behaved children with gifts and treats, Krampus is responsible for punishing those who have misbehaved. He carries a bundle of birch sticks for swatting naughty children and sometimes a sack or basket to carry them away. The figure of Krampus serves as a dark counterpart to the benevolent Saint Nicholas, embodying the concept of retribution during the festive season. This tradition has evolved over the years, and Krampus has become a popular figure in modern culture, celebrated in various festivals and events that embrace his mischievous and frightening persona.
