Our shared human patterns lend flavor to the expression of our character in this life. They also provide a means to understand and transform our relationship with our circumstances and develop an appreciation for each other. Join Rachael Henrichsen for an introduction to this fundamental aspect of the Zi Wei Dou Shu. Rachael will teach an in-depth course on Zi Wei Dou Shu in collaboration with Da Yuan Circle (the foundation dedicated to preserving the teachings of Liu Ming) in the upcoming Year of the Wood Snake.

Shawn Lee - Classical Chinese Sword Dance
Shawn is a second-generation Oaklander, and has been a Chinese dancer and choreographer for the past 10 years in Bay Area collegiate Chinese dance groups. Shawn's work encompass a broad array of classical, folk, and contemporary dances from east and southeast Asia. Shawn is committed to brining gender-binary pushing, intersectional, and fundamentally Oaklandish stories of kindness and unity through the normally conservative medium of Chinese dance, bringing new ideas to old audiences and artforms. This Classical Chinese sword dance evokes the different responses the Hills and the Flatlands have to public safety, and how ultimately solutions only work if we work together. Drawing from the dancer's Oaklandish roots on both sides of MacArthur Blvd., this piece shows how despite our differences and the injustices that drive them, there is beauty, humanity, and hope to be had when we work together, across the redline.
